BaconCamp - September 4, 2010

Bacon. It's delicious. And we'd all eat a pile of it if no one was watching. It deserves to be celebrated. Wild Goose Creative is the official Columbus presenter for the national event BaconCamp! It is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment about bacon. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants who are the main actors of the event. It i...s community driven and everyone is encouraged to participate by presenting (food, art, demo), judging, or volunteering. BaconCamp is not a spectator sport. There are a limited number of tickets available, so buy them early! We do expect to sell out and we want to be able to celebrate bacon with you! We will be holding a Bacon Cooking contest and a Bacon Art/Craft contest. We will have prizes available from amazing Columbus vendors and restaurants, and illustrious judges from local businesses. Columbus Creative Soapbox

Join us on Thursday, July 8 at 6 pm, outside the Columbus Museum of Art for the Columbus Creative Soapbox. Nearly 70 arts groups from Columbus will get 2 minutes at the mic to tell everyone what they do. Come see a sampling of Columbus' amazing creative scene!

We're opening our doors to celebrate geek culture! If you are a comic book fan, superhero fanatic, film buff, gamer of any description--or if you wish you were--you are welcome!

7pm Gallery Opening: Hey Kids!: A History of Comic Book Advertising
Throughout Geekfest we will be featuring Hey Kids! : A History of Comic Book Advertising,” a exhibition curated by local artist Michael Neno. The exhibit will feature over 60 ads from the 1930s to the present. In addition to classic ads for Charles Atlas, with their sand-kicking bullies, X-Ray Specs and 'Sea Monkeys,' the exhibit will feature a diverse array of obscure, bizarre, charming and unintentionally funny appeals--from the earliest ads for video games to the anti-drug ads of today's comic books.

Thursday June 17
7pm Forbidden Kingdoms: The Art and Science of Roleplaying Games
Gaming enthusiast and actor Karl Boettcher sees a natural link between roleplaying and the stage, and he leads a group of gaming actors in a roleplaying demonstration/performance for you. This event is designed to share with an audience of experienced gamers and the inexperienced alike the awesomeness of communal improvisational storytelling. Come learn about roleplaying, and experience a cool story!The setting is Edinburgh, just before WWII. A steam train puffs in the distance, on a gleaming steel bridge across the Firth of Tay. Danger and intrigue await those who ride upon it! Will our heroes ride into glory or will our foes manage a great destruction?

Friday June 18
8pm Sketch by Number presents an hour of geeky sketch comedy
Local sketch comedy team Sketch by Number produces unique, fast-paced, audience-participatory comedy, and they get their geek on in a frenetic hour on the Wild Goose Creative stage. This is a team of talented performers, not to be missed.

9:30pm Nerdcore Rising: a film
Nerdcore: what happens when you mix hip-hop and computer-obsessed geeks. Nerdcore Rising follows MC Frontalot, the "godfather of nerdcore," on his first national tour to reveal to roots of the genre, the dorky complexities of its artists, and one MC's fight for nerd stardom. The film features Weird Al Yankovic, Jello Biafra, Tycho and Gabe, Brian Posehn, MC Frontalot, MC Kris, MC Lars, and a slew of other nerdcore artists and commentators. Come for your opportunity to see this film in Columbus!

Saturday June 19
9pm Video Game Costume Party
Come dressed as your favorite video game character -- anything from Link to Luigi to Liu Kang. Can you manage a Tetris block? We think maybe you can! There'll be door prizes, a variety of prizes for costumes, wicked video game music, and vintage and modern video game competitions, as well as cool gaming-themed food! Some of the proceeds will be donated to Free Geek Columbus, a local organization that provides computers to under-resourced populations.

Last night, local musician Chris Gatton played to a packed house for our February Third Thursdays.

Chris walked use through a variety of styles while playing some covers and some original pieces.

Thanks to Chris, the band, and everyone who beat the snow and joined us for some great music! We look forward to having Chris play at our space again!

Chris Gatton has always had an acute appreciation for the beautiful in music, regardless of genre. Join him as he explores the elusive character of that thing we call "good" in music. With the help of three fellow local musicians, Craig Allen, Steffie Willis, and Andre Scott, he will be guiding you through some of his favorite melodies ranging from the Beatles to Taylor Swift to his own original melodies all in the context of an intimate jazz quartet.

New Year's Festival: Brunch!

We wrapped up the Festival today with a brunch. What better way to end a big event than with a quiet and fun meal together?

We enjoyed eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, juice, mimosas, and crepes made by Wild Goose member Andy.

New Year's Festival: Book-Binding, LED Blinky-Bugs, Theatre Daedalus, & Matt Monta

The second full day of our New Year's Festival began with a breakfast at The Best Breakfast and Sandwiches in Westerville. Wild Goose member and breakfast blogger Nick Dekker led a small troupe there. Look for a post on his blog about that. Later that morning, back at the Wild Goose space, we hosted two workshops. Pictured first is Jenn Deafenbaugh of Fuse Factory leading a workshop on LED Blinky-Bugs. Look for many more workshops and events with Fuse Factory later this year!


Meanwhile, Alison Chapman of Igloo Letterpress led a workshop on book-binding. If you haven't had a chance to visit Alison's shop in Worthington, make sure you do so soon!



Later that afternoon saw a staged reading of The Copper Anniversary by members of Theatre Daedalus. Here director Jeremy Sony introduces the piece.



After dinner and an improv comedy show, we finished out the day with a concert by Wild Goose-favorites Matt Monta and the Hot Coal Band. We hope to have them back at the Goose again sometime soon!

New Year's Festival: Lavash Dinner, Alwood Sisters, & Night After Last

We finished out our first full day of the 2009 Festival with three exciting events. First was a dinner catered by Lavash Cafe.


Then we were graced with a concert by the Alwood Sisters. We were happy to welcome them to our space again.


And we finished the night with one of our signature events: Night After Last. This is a night of readings, stories, poems, and music looking at those moments in our lives - such as the changing of years - that have affected and defined us. We heard poems and stories from a number of writers and performers.

Plus music from Wild Goose-favorite Morgan Foster, of Chicago's Common Shiner.

The Festival continues tomorrow morning with Breakfast with Nick. Meet him at The Best Breakfast & Sandwiches in Westerville for a tasty breakfast and chat about food writing. Then we pick up at our space with two workshops at 11 a.m., one from Fuse Factory, and one from Igloo Letterpress. Hope to see you there!

New Year's Festival: Improv Legends and Build Your Own Smoker photos

Workshops are a-happenin' this afternoon! We're viewing the feature-length documentary Improv Legends, in which famous folks talk about the art form of improvisational comedy.


Across the street at our new WGC Studios, Karl Boettcher is leading a workshop on How To Build a Smoker.


He's sharing some examples of his work, including smoked salmon and smoked bananas.

New Year's Festival: Serial Cereal photos

This morning we started 2010 with a big meal of cereal and a staged reading by members of Whistling in the Dark Theatre Company of Transformers: Starscream's Brigade. You wouldn't believe some of the dialogue and stage directions. What better way to start the year?


A delicious breakfast of many favorite cereals, with Snowville milk and Brioso coffee!
