Night Before/After Last 2008/09

Check it out! I submit to you these two photos. The top one is from the 2007 New Year's Festival, during Night Before Last, as Ryan and Karl read a piece together. The bottom is from the 2008 Festival, during Night After Last, as they read the same piece again.

New Year's Festival Day 4 (January 3rd)

Our last full day of the Festival kicked off with a unique Wild Goose Creative-style event of Saturday morning cartoons: a cereal breakfast with a Buster Keaton short film and some classic Popeye cartoons, led by the wonderful Mr. Michael Neno.

Later that morning Jen Bhaerman of Snowville Creamy led us in a cheese tasting. She discussed the cheese-making process, led us through a tasting of six cheeses and some whole milk, and taught us the ins and outs of enjoying and exploring cheese.

Then, that afternoon we witnessed the Craftin' Death Match. Hosted by inimitible local crafter Amy D, the Death Match featured crafters competing against each to make the best crafts on-the-spot. With hard-to-please judges and enthusiastic crowds, the Death Match was a wild time. Our finalist, Brad Nydam, faced down the Craft Lady of Steel, aka Sharon Bell.

Now that everyone was inspired by the Craftin' Death Match, we worked on our own crafting projects. First, the good folks from Little Alouette taught us about making wooden toys.

Then, Cleveland artists Kathy Patton and Adrianne Beros taught us about silver oxidation and fashion design.

And here's a little bit of video of the Saturday Morning Cartoons and the cheese tasting.

New Year's Festival Day 3 (January 2nd)

Our second full day of the Festival: Friday, January 2. We began with an event away from the Festival HQ. About 22 people traveled to the new Banana Bean Cafe location to enjoy breakfast, conversation, and a brief talk about food blogging. In addition to Nick, our resident breakfast aficionado, we were joined by Jim Ellison of CMH Gourmand (pictured on the right below).

Mid-morning brought a pair of workshops. Jeff Davis from Cafe Brioso led a coffee tasting...

...while Andy and Chris Shaw spoke about songwriting.

That afternoon we experienced a jazz/poetry slam with Andy Anderson and some folks from Writer's Block Poetry. They were backed up by our house band Moot Knacks.

Following the jazz/poetry slam, members of Wild Goose Creative presented a comedy cabaret. Look for these to be a regular feature of WGC programming in 2009!

We rounded out the day with a late-night concert from the always excellent Andy Shaw Band.

And finally some video, to give you a taste of the sights and sounds from the day.

New Year's Festival Day 2 (January 1st)

Here are some pictures of our first full day of the Festival - Thursday, January 1st. We let everyone sleep in that morning and began with a brunch. The brunch include eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, fruit, bread, coffee, juice, and much more. Always a great start to the year!

Check out the Festival gallery on the walls. This included a collective piece that was painted and drawn over the course of the Festival by the participants.

Andy Tay-lo on registration!

A Wild Goose favorite joined us yet again to headline the evening: Hayseed.

After Hayseed's concert, we contemplated the New Year with Night After Last. Last year we held this event on December 30th, and called it Night Before Last, but this we changed things up because of the Festival schedule. The night consisted of music and readings reflecting on 2008 and looking forward to 2009. Another of our favorite musicians, Matt Beckler, played a few songs for us.

Mike Brooks of Common Shiner shared a couple piano pieces, too.

Ryan and Karl reading a piece called "Crowley and Aziraphale's New Year's Resolutions," a piece about an angel and a demon making their resolutions.

And finally, a brief video giving you some highlights of the sights and sounds of Day 2.

Pictures of the New Year's Eve party

Setting up for the New Year's Eve party!

We're projecting a continuous slideshow on the wall that lists the Festival schedule, our sponsors, and upcoming events for 2009.

A bottle of Goose Brew 2008! We brewed this pale ale at the October Too Many Cooks.

Working on the community art piece.

Common Shiner rockin' the party.

The wall projection came in handy when we needed lyrics for "Auld Lang Syne."

New Year's Festival Day 1

Check out this little montage of things from the New Year's party. We kicked off the Festival with this small party. It featured food and drink, music from Common Shiner, an art gallery that included a community art piece (it will be in progress during the entire Festival), and lots of community.

Happy New Year from Wild Goose Creative! You can hear our round of "Auld Lang Syne" at the end of the night, led by Morgan Foster. We didn't print out the lyrics, so at the last minute we projected them on the wall.

You're still welcome to join us for any parts of the Festival; we're just getting started! Check out the schedule here!
